Light emitting or charge transporting compounds are provided of formula:Z - A - (s - B)nwherein:Arepresents a linear aromatic molecular core, containing a fluorene ring structure substituted at the 9-position and in which the 9-positions of the fluorene is not susceptible to oxidation (e.g. by the substituent having no hydrogen substituents existing on the atom immediately adjacent the 9-position of the fluorene ring system), and wherein the ring carbon atoms in the fluorene ring system are optionally replaced by nitrogen atoms;Srepresent a flexible spacer unit (e.g. an alkylene chain optionally interrupted by -CO- or hetero atoms);Brepresents a crosslinking group (e.g. an optionally substituted acrylate or 1,4-pentadienyl group, an electron-deficient maleimide, maleate or fumarate, or an electron-rich alkenyl ether, e.g. vinyl);nequals 1 to 3; andZrepresents any entity compatible with the B groups, i.e, one that will join to the B groups or at least will not interfere with B groups of different molecules joining to each other, and includes the group -S-B. The corresponding polymers may be used as fluorescent and phosphorescent light emitters, and used in diodes, transistors and photovoltaic devices such as an LED and dot matrix display device. Also provided are compounds of formulae S-A-S and T-A-T, where T is H or a terminal substituent. |
