abstract |
An electrolytic metal treatment is described, where electrolysis of a metal surface in an electrolyte is performed. The electrolyte used has an electrical conductivity of between 1000 and 5000muS/cm and a pH between 10 and 13.5. The metal surface is subsequently treated with a zirconium (Zr) containing compound to provide protection equivalent to that given using a chromate-based pre-treatment. The pre-treatment may be used on an aluminium, magnesium, copper, silicon sheet steel surfaces or alloys thereof. The Zr containing compound may be zirconium phosphate or zirconium oxide. |
