titleOfInvention | Fibre-on-end materials |
abstract | A process for manufacturing fiber-on-end material, comprises the sequential steps of: a. providing a shaped billet comprising fused, or partially fused, fibers on end, b. cutting trapezoidal sections 7 from the billet such that the fibers are oriented substantially perpendicular to the base of the trapezoidal section, c. welding the trapezoidal sections together to form a cylindrical billet that is two concentric polygons in cross-section, d. mounting the billet formed in step c on a spindle, e. continuously rotating the billet, and f. skiving fiber-on-end material of a desired thickness from the continuously rotating billet, see figure 9. The method may further comprise repeating steps b and c to form at least one additional billet, stacking the billets on top of each other, and fusing the billets to form a single billet. The trapezoidal sections which are cut in step b may be capped with a polymer film prior to step c. The fibers may comprise hollow fibers the sheath-core or "islands in the sea" type, which are contacted with a solvent to dissolve a component to produce a porous membrane or a capillary array. The fibres may also include microprojections and the material may comprise a mixture of fibers of at least two different defined diameters. |
