titleOfInvention | Fibre-on-end materials |
abstract | A process for manufacturing fiber-on-end material, comprises the sequential steps of: a. providing a shaped billet comprising fused, or partially fused, fibers on end, b. cutting annular sectors, see figure 11, from the billet such that the fibers are oriented substantially perpendicular to the outer arc of the annular sector, c. welding the annular sectors together to form a cylindrical billet that is two concentric circles in cross-section, d. mounting the billet formed in step c on a spindle, e. continuously rotating the billet, and f. skiving fiber-on-end material of a desired thickness from the continuously rotating billet. The method may further comprise repeating steps b and c to form at least one additional billet, stacking the billets on top of each other, and fusing the billets to form a single billet, see figure 10. The annular sectors which are cut in step b may be capped with a polymer film prior to step c. The fibers may comprise hollow fibers the sheath-core or "islands in the sea" type, which are contacted with a solvent to dissolve a component to produce a porous membrane or a capillary array. The fibres may also include microprojections and the material may comprise a mixture of fibers of at least two different defined diameters. |
