The use of a cardiac glycoside and/or a diuretic in a solvent or carrier in the formulation of pharmaceutical composition for the therapeutic treatment of neuropathic pain. The cardiac glycoside is selected from digoxin, digitoxin, ouabain, strophanthia, but preferably is digoxin. The diuretic is a loop diuretic, thiazide diuretic or sulphonyl urea, but preferably is furosemide. The carrier is preferably a topical medicament, and is in the form of a gel, a patch, lacquer or paint. Also claimed is a method of manufacturing a gel based composition comprising mixing propylene glycol, ethanol and water, adding cardiac glycoside and/or diuretic to excess, and then adding a gelling agent to the saturated solution. The gelling agent is preferably hydroxypropylcellulose. |
