titleOfInvention Formation of networks
abstract A facility in a MAC layer of a wireless communications network provides two modes of operation of a piconet. In a first mode, the medium is offered for contention by all devices in a substantially conventional fashion. In a second mode, the medium is offered for contention by clusters of devices in turn. In the latter case, the contention period is sub-divided and subdivisions are allocated to respective clusters. All devices in the network remain capable of receiving communication from all other devices, regardless of which mode is in operation.
