abstract A process for preparing an optionally substituted 9,10-diaryl anthracene including reacting an optionally substituted anthracene with a halogenating agent to yield a halogenated anthracene, and reacting the halogenated anthracene with an aryl boronic acid or a boronic ester to yield the optionally substituted 9,10-diaryl anthracene is disclosed. A preferred method comprises brominating 2-t-butylanthracene with N-bromosuccinimide in dimethylformamaide (DMF); reacting the 2-t-butyl-9,10-dibromoanthracene thus formed with an arylboronic acid in the presence of Pd(PPh3)4 and aqueous potassium carbonate in toluene/ethanol; and isolating the desired 2-t-butyl-9,10-diarylanthracene. Preferred 9,10-diarylanthracenes are 2-t-butyl-9,10-bis(beta-naphthyl)anthracene (TBADN), 2-t-butyl-9,10-diphenylanthracene and 2-t-butyl-9,10-di(4-t-butyl)phenylanthracene. An electroluminescent device, for example an OLED comprising a light-emitting layer comprising the optionally substituted 9,10-diaryl anthracene is also disclosed.
