abstract A reagent system for testing for the presence of bacteria in an aqueous sample. The reagent system (which is sterilised) comprises a nutrient medium, an agent for neutralising the effect of any anti-bacterial agent and a colorimetric indicator to provide a visual indication of the presence of bacteria. The colorimetric reagent may be 2, 3, 5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride and the neutralising agent may be thiosulphate. The reagent system may preferably be in the form of a tablet. The reagent system may be used for testing for the presence of bacteria in water from a bathing facility.
