I.F.F. system |
abstract |
An I.F.F. (Identify Friend or Foe) system comprises a transceiver mounted upon a weapons munition for transmitting an interrogating signal. A transponder to be associated with a friendly possible target is operative upon receipt of the interrogating signal to modulate and reflect or return that signal back to the munition with information indicative of the friendly status of the target, the munition being operative to disarm and divert upon receipt thereof. The transceiver may employ a laser or UHF upread spectrum radio and frequently changing interrogation and response codes, and may be on a missile arranged to follow a laser designator/interrogation beam from a launch platform and arranged to respond to status signals from a transponder responsive to the laser. The transponder may be located on a vehicle or building and be arranged to be disabled a predetermined time after a person with a further transponder leaves. The munition may carry a transponder to aid its recovery. |
