A method for the identification of a substance by mass spectrometry, comprising: a) ionizing a sample by electro spray ionization, b) acquiring a mass spectrum of a first polarity, c) determing a probable molar mass by adduct recognition, d) acquiring at least one daughter ion spectrum, and e) comparing the data acquired in step d) and c) with data in a library containing mass spectra and daughter ion spectra, also of adduct ions, of known substances. Before the ionization substance separation is performed by liquid chromatography or capillary electrophoresis. The substance ions are frequently formed as adducts with cations or anions. Parent ions for the acquisition of daughter ions are selected based on the adduct pattern. |
