abstract A sustained release bolus for the treatment of conditions such as facial eczema and other conditions associated with zinc deficiency in ruminants. The bolus comprises zinc metal particles of less than 1mm largest dimension, preferably less than 0.25mm, dispersed in a slow release wax binder. The zinc metal particles may comprise 85-95% by weight of the bolus. The binder may comprise waxes with different congealing points to provide variation in release rates. Suitable binders include paraffin wax, carnuba wax, beeswax and mixtures thereof. The bolus may be prepared by forming a slurry of zinc metal particles and molten wax binder and forming the mixture into the bolus by cooling in a mould or by extruding through a die.
