titleOfInvention Lubricant base oils with optimised branching and high viscosity index
abstract The invention relates to lubricant base oils comprising paraffinic components with optimised branching. One embodiment relates to a process for making a lubricant base oil by hydroisomerisation of a waxy feed over a shape selective catalyst, followed by solvent dewaxing of the product to produce a lubricant base comprising paraffinic hydrocarbon components having less than 8 alkyl branches per 100 carbons, wherein less than 20% of said branches are in the 2-position. The base oil has a pour point < -8{C; a kinematic viscosity at 100{C of 3.2 cSt or more; and a viscosity index greater than a target viscosity index given by: Target Viscosity Index = [22 x ln(kinematic viscosity@ 100{C)] + 132 The waxy feed may be derived from a Fischer-Tropsch reaction. The lubricant base oils may be mixed with additives to form a finished lubricant.
