abstract The VCO in the transmitter or receiver portion of a high-speed SERDES (serializer-deserializer) data communications link comprises a pair of cross-coupled transistors 110-112 and a pair of LC resonators each comprising a helical multi-layer inductor 114, 116 and a programmable MOS capacitor network 122a-122c, 122d-122f. The MOS capacitor networks may be controlled by digital or analogue signals. The VCO is less susceptible to power supply and substrate noise than a ring oscillator. The multi-layer helical inductor consumes less space than a spiral inductor. The transistors may be MOS or bipolar types. The oscillator output level is controlled by a current source 118. The SERDES transmits numerous lower bit-rate data inputs along a single high-speed differential line (figure 1).
