abstract Downhole water chemistry is obtained in situ by addition of a colorimetric reagent to a water sample followed by determining the resulting colour of the sample in a colorimetric analyser. Apparatus for the downhole measurement comprises means to supply the reagent, e.g. an injector for injecting the reagent into a water flow line, and a colorimetric analyser e.g. a spectrometer. Typically the pH or the ion content of the water sample is measured.
