titleOfInvention Automatic validation of sensing devices in a road traffic monitoring system
abstract The system comprises a first sensor 106 for measuring a parameter of a vehicle 315 and a second sensor 221 for measuring the same parameter to a higher degree of accuracy at the same measurement point and when a predetermined condition is met. The system further comprises a condition sensor for determining when a predetermined condition has been met. Preferably, the predetermined condition relates to a single vehicle passing the measurement point such that no other vehicle passes the measurement point within a time period, preferably one second, before and after the vehicle being sensed. The vehicle parameter may be speed, density or a count of the number of passing vehicles. In use the second measurement is used to determine an uncertainty or error associated with the first sensor and enables the first sensor to be re calibrated. In one embodiment the first sensor is an inductive loop with a Doppler radar system as the second system. In another embodiment one sensor may be a video camera.
