abstract A lightweight fire resistant door 300 consists of a core 301 formed from resin bonded expanded (exfoliated) vermiculite having a predetermined moisture content held within a framework of rails 303 and stiles 302 which are formed from a similar vermiculite but are of a higher density and different moisture content than the core. The stiles, rails and core may be joined together by tenon and mortice joints, preferably also using adhesive. An intumescent material 306 may be placed around the edge of the door and this material may be protectively encapsulated in PVC 310 or otherwise covered. Decorative panels 311 may be affixed to the faces of the door and these can be separated from the core by and air gap. In some embodiments, the core consists of multiple panels which are secured together by adhesive.
