abstract There are disclosed polymeric or oligomeric products obtainable from the reaction of an anthraquinone with an aromatic diamine, characterised in that the anthraquinone is substituted or is not substituted and in that the diamine is a diamino anthracene which is substituted or is not substituted. A preferred product has the general formula III where, R<SP>1</SP> may be the same as or different to R<SP>1'</SP>, which may be the same as or different to R<SP>2</SP>, which may be the same as or different to R<SP>2'</SP> and is a hydrogen atom or CH<SB>3</SB>, CH<SB>3</SB>CH<SB>2,</SB> -OCH<SB>3</SB>, -OCH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>3</SB>, -CH<SB>2</SB>OCH<SB>3</SB>, -CH<SB>2</SB>OCH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>OCH<SB>3</SB>, methoxyethoxyethoxymethyl, aryloxymethyl, phenyl, Cl, Br, CN or NO<SB>2</SB>, -CH<SB>2</SB>COOR or -CH<SB>2</SB>NHCOR''' (where R''' is C<SB>1</SB> - C<SB>6</SB> alkyl or a phenyl or biphenyl group), or a C<SB>1</SB> - C<SB>5</SB> alkyl group, or an aryl group e.g. a benzyl group, or an -SO<SB>3</SB>H group or a hydroxyl group or a C<SB>1</SB> -C<SB>5</SB> alkoxy group or an H<SB>2</SB>PO<SB>3</SB> group, and R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>1'</SP> are different to R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>2'</SP> and n is an integer ranging from 10 to 100.
