titleOfInvention | A strategy for maintaining pregnancy |
abstract | A method for maintaining pregnancy in a female pregnant with at least one fertile embryo, comprising engrafting one or more infertile embryos into the uterus. Particularly suitable embryos are parthenogenetic embryos, formed by activating and diploidizing unfertilised oocytes. The method is particularly useful in mammals such as the pig, where pregnancy does not continue to term when there are only a few embryos in the uterus. The method is considered to be useful in circumstances where the embryo has been manipulated, for example grown from an embryonic cell wherein the chromosomal DNA has been genetically altered, or grown from a cell produced by nuclear transfer. In an exemplary embodiment, the embryos may have been genetically altered to include an expressible encoding region for a human protein, or to produce tissue suitable for xenotransplantation by the inactivation of a gene that causes expression of an antigen that is xenogeneic to humans. |
