An assay for determining the effect of a chemical substance on the phenotype, physiology, behaviour or biochemistry of nematode worms (particularly C. elegans) comprises detecting changes in the movement behaviour of said worms on contact with said substance, the changes in movement behaviour being determined by non-visual detection means. The assay may be conducted in a multi-well format and may be effected in a liquid medium containing a water soluble polymer which prevents the worms from sticking to the wells. |
