abstract | Alkyl chlorides, other than ethyl chloride, are obtained by treating gases containing the lower olefines with gaseous hydrochloric acid in the presence of a catalyst comprising an iron oxide or chloride, or compound adapted to form iron chloride, and preferably at ordinary temperature. Any ethylene present is not attacked under these conditions. The catalyst may be employed in the solid state or in solution or suspended in a liquid such as nitrobenzene, hydrocarbons or aqueous salt solutions. According to the example, sufficient gaseous hydrochloric acid is added to a gas consisting of ethylene, propylene, butylene and methane to combine with the propylene and butylene present and the mixture passed at ordinary temperature over iron chloride; by cooling to -60 DEG C. or by washing with oil, a mixture of butyl and propyl chlorides is obtained. |
