titleOfInvention | Detecting micro-organisms in a fluid |
abstract | A method of identifying micro-organisms in a fluid, eg to identify the cause of an infection, comprises taking a sample of the fluid eg urine; if necessary increasing the number of micro-organisms by culturing; suspending aliquots of the fluid in a plurality of different solutions, the solutions providing different experimental conditions by varying in pH, ionic strength, and/or concentration of surface active agent, heavy metal ions, chelating or complexing agent, organic solvent dye or stain, polyol or polyether; applying an electric field across the solutions, measuring the velocity, displacement, zeta potential, or electrophoretic mobility of any micro-organisms present; and comparing the measured values with tables of corresponding values of known micro-organisms measured under the substantially identical conditions to determine which micro-organisms are present. Each measurement may be done by applying an electric field across a measurement cell containing a solution, illuminating the cell, and analysing light scattered by micro-organisms in the solution to determine their speed of movement in the electric field. |
