titleOfInvention Self cooling a beverage container
abstract A self-cooling container has water acting as a refrigerant on a pre-wetted wick (428), in a first chamber (424, 426) and an absorbent (418) in another chamber (419). One or both of the chambers is at low pressure. Upon actuation of a plunger (432) piercing a membrane (440), the pressure over the wick drops, water vapour is absorbed by the absorbent from the internal atmosphere causing a cooling effect on the beverage (422). The absorbent may be surrounded by a heat sink (444). The heat sink may be in the form of further wicking means soaked in water. Micro capsules containing water, high heat capacity material or phase change material, may be provided in the further wicking means. During the cooling process, the container is inverted, causing a mixing disc (430) to descend through the beverage, thereby stirring the beverage. A ring pull (442) allows the beverage to be consumed. The adsorbent may extend into the beverage via a cylindrical tube (522, Fig.5). Heat exchange means in the form of wire filaments, loops, protrusions or fins may extend outwardly from the tube. The adsorbent material may include pockets of phase change material.
