abstract Described is a method for growing an organism, preferably a fungi, wherein the organism is grown on a material in a first vessel and is entrained to grow in a predetermined direction into a medium in a second vessel. Single cylindrical receptacles 30 are joined by collars 56 and may have mesh inserts 40 which allow filamentous organisms to grow therebetween but prevent the egress of growth medium contained in adjacent receptacles. The technique is devised to provide a substantially homogenous sample of the organism across the medium and overcomes sectoring. The culture of the basidiomycetes, <I>Schizospora paradoxa</I> and <I>Phlebia delfectens</I>, and <I>Asperigillus terreus</I> is specifically described. The method can be used to provide fungal-derived pharmaceutical products.
