titleOfInvention Protection of charged particle generator
abstract A charged particle generator 40 includes first electrode 12, second electrode 14, source 16 supplying current for heating first electrode 12, and source 18 generating an attraction voltage for generation of an electric field between first electrode 12 and second electrode 14. The first electrode 12 discharges ions or electrons as a result of the electric field between the first and second electrodes. The apparatus 40 further includes a unit 66 for measuring the current for heating first electrode 12, unit 62 for measuring current flowing through second electrode 14 in accordance with an amount of the charged particles discharged from first electrode 12 to second electrode 14, and a circuit 60 for shutting down power supply to at least either current source 16 or voltage source 18, to terminate the supply of current for heating electrode 12 and generation of the attraction voltage, based on the current measured by unit 66, and current measured by unit 62, respectively. Circuit 60 may respond to decrease or interruption of current caused by disconnection of cables J1,J2.
