abstract A display comprising a matrix of pixels has a control section providing grey scale display by controlling the number of times pixels are lit during a predetermined period. To avoid the 'dynamic false contour effect', the predetermined period is divided into two sub-periods and the combination of pixels which are lit in the first and second sub-periods are differentiated, with the same display information being used for both periods. The display may be a plasma display or a ferroelectric liquid crystal display.
