abstract A cyclic compound of formula (I) wherein R<SP>x</SP> groups which may be the same or different are selected from -O-(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>-O- where n is an integer of from 2-6; R<SP>y</SP> and R<SP>z</SP> groups which may be the same or different are independently selected from hydrogen, halogen or a hydrocarbyl group; R<SP>a</SP> together with R<SP>b</SP> of the adjacent phenyl ring and R<SP>c</SP> together with R<SP>d</SP> of the adjacent phenyl ring form a group of formula -(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>- or -O-(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>p</SB>-O-where m and p are integers of from 1-5, and each group R<SP>a</SP>-R<SP>b</SP> and R<SP>c</SP>-R<SP>d</SP> may be the same or different; and x is an integer of 2 or more, such as 4. Compounds of formula (I) display particular selectivity for specific ions such as potassium ions. They are useful <I>inter alia</I> in reactions where scavenging of a specific cation is required or as ion specific electrodes.
