titleOfInvention Electrochemical sensor for hydrides of arsenic and phosphorus
abstract The sensor, which is preferably for arsine or phosphine, comprises a catalytically inactive working electrode 3 comprising carbon, and a reference electrode 4, in electrolyte 9 and separated from the atmosphere by a diffusion membrane 2. The electrolyte is sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid or a mixture thereof, and contains silver sulphate, silver phosphate, or a mixture thereof as additive, provided that a) the additive is not silver sulphate when the electrolyte is phosphoric acid only, and b) the additive is not silver phosphate when the electrolyte is sulphuric acid only. The electrolyte additive is preferably in the form of a saturated solution, and excess solid additive 15 may be present. The electrolyte may be in a porous body 10 and an auxiliary electrode 5 may also be present. The carbon working electrode 3 may be a thick layer, which may be porous, a sintered mixture of carbon and gold, or a sintered mixture of carbon/PTFE which is applied to the diffusion membrane 2 to a thickness of 100-1000 micrometers.
