titleOfInvention Miniature air gap inspection device
abstract A miniature air gap inspection device 10 comprises a tractor section 12 having a tractor frame attachable to a retaining ring of a generator, a mast section 14 coupled with the tractor frame comprising an extendable mast, and an inspection head 16 coupled with the extendable mast that supports at least one inspection tool for performing in-situ generator inspections. The inspection device may be used for the inspection of a generator stator and a generator field with the generator field in place, where the inspection device passes through a radial air gap between a core iron and the retaining ring of the generator of greater than 0.5" (1.27cm). Preferably the tractor section is powered to move along tracks (22, fig 2) in a circumferential direction around the retaining ring. Preferably the head section moves axially with the mast, which may be extended and retracted by use of a pulley system (see fig 3). The head section may include a sled (64, fig 4) consisting of two shoes (68A, 68B, fig 4A) that are expandable and contractable, eg by gears and levers, or by pneumatic spring return air rams (100, fig 4). With the shoes expanded, axial movement of the head may be initiated to begin inspection. Wedge tightness inspections maybe performed by using a separate shoe assembly that includes a wedge tapping module (72, fig 5). The inspection tool may also include a camera assembly 66. Alternatively the inspection head may carry an ELCID coil for inspecting shorter stator punchings. In another aspect of the invention a miniature air gap inspection device includes a tractor attachable to the retaining ring, an inspection assembly including a contractible shoe sled, and at least one inspection tool.
