titleOfInvention Performing bioreactions using a tubular elastomer membrane
abstract A hydrophobic substrate (eg a nutrient) which is solid at room temperature and pressure is supplied to a biological fluid (eg a microbe culture) 5 in the form of a solution which is supplied to the interior of a tubular elastomer membrane 2 immersed in the fluid. The apparatus may include a second zone, also containing the biological fluid, communicating with the first zone by an overflow 7. The fluid in the second zone may be recirculated to a treatment unit 8. If unit 8 fails and contaminates the second zone the first culture zone is unaffected. In another arrangement (Fig 2), fluid from the first zone is recirculated to a separate unit containing the tubular membrane.
