Removing unwanted downhole material |
abstract |
An apparatus (A) for the removal of unwanted downhole material from a wellbore comprises an upper body (30) which supports tubing segments (40). Fluid is pumped into the tool from a surface pump causing fluid to be expelled from jets (32). This creates a reduction in pressure within the body (30) causing fluid laden with material to enter the inner tubes (50, fig 3) and to be transported (as shown by arrow 72) towards zone (70). When the mixture of fluid and material reaches the zone (70), the increase in cross-sectional area results in a reduction in transportation velocity, causing the suspended material to precipitate outward into an annular space (53, fig 3) surrounding the inner tubes (50). The bottom end of this annular space is closed off by an internal ring (66) thereby creating a large capacity trap in which the falling debris is captured. The clean fluid then exits through a screen (62). In an alternative embodiment the assembly may be supported upon an electric supply line employing a downhole pump in place of the surface pump. |
