titleOfInvention | Liquid crystal polymers and devices |
abstract | Certain polymeric compounds of formula (I) where where R<1> is a mesogenic group or a hydrocarbyl group; R<2> and R<3> are independently selected from a group OR<4> or NR<5>R<6>; where R<4> is selected from hydrogen, a metal ion, a hydrocarbyl group, a mesogenic group or together with another group R<4> forms a cross-linking group; and R<5> and R<6> are independently selected from hydrogen, hydrocarbyl or a mesogenic group; or R<2> and R<3> together form an oxo group; X is a group COO, CO, OOC, O, S, SO or SO2; n is an integer of greater than 1; and m is 0 or an integer of greater than 1, b is 0 or 1, p is 0 or an integer of 1-20, a is 0 or an integer of from 1-20 and d is an integer of from 1 to 20; subject to certain exclusions. The compounds are liquid crystal polymers useful in liquid crystal devices, sensors, as stationary phases in chromatography and non-linear optical devices. Polymers can be prepared by a particularly convenient method, in which maleic anhydride is condensed with an alkene, and subsequently derivatised as desired. |
