This invention relates to certain novel benzoxazinone or quinolinone compounds and derivatives thereof, their synthesis, and their use as oxytocin receptor antagonists. One application of these compounds is in the treatment of preterm labor in mammals, especially humans. The ability of the compounds to relax uterine contractions in mammals also makes them useful for treating dysmenorrhea and stopping labor prior to cesarean delivery. The compounds are of formulae. wherein Z is selected from CH 2 O, CH=CH or CH 2 CH 2 ; X is selected from O, CH 2 , CF 2 , R<SP>1</SP> is selected from hydrogen, halogen or C 1-5 alkyl; R<SP>2</SP> is selected from hydrogen, C 1-5 alkyl, hydroxymethyl or CONH 2 ; and R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen or various organic substituents. |
