abstract |
A process for removing tarnish from tarnished silverware comprising contacting the tarnish silverware with an anti-tarnish composition in an automatic dishwasher. The anti-tarnish composition comprises an alkaline electrolyte and a metal additive which has a more negative standard redox potential than silver, measured relative to a standard hydrogen electrode at 25‹C. The metal additive may be aluminium, manganese, magnesium, iron or zinc; and the alkaline electrolyte may be an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate, eg sodium hydroxide. In addition builder compounds and nonionic surfactants may be present. |
