abstract A steel tooth (80) for use in a rolling cone bit includes a hardfacing layer (94) that comprises at least two hardfacing materials having different wear characteristics disposed over a parent metal core (92) in an asymmetric arrangement of regions of the first and second materials. The first and second materials may be disposed over upper and lower regions respectively of a gage facing surface. A hardfacing material may also be applied to the sides of the tooth and wrapped around the edges to form a portion of the gage facing surface.
