titleOfInvention Removal of heteroatoms and/or recovery of metal from oxidation reactions to decompose waste organics using electrochemically regenerated metal oxide or salt
abstract In the decomposition of waste organics by oxidation using oxide or salt of ruthenium, osmium, iridium, rhodium metal in the higher valent state and electrochemical regeneration of the reduced metal in the anolyte compartment of an electrochemical cell comprising alkali metal halide aq. solution, heteroatoms such as N,Cl,P,As,S present in the feed are removed to prevent excessive build-up in the reaction and/or metal is recovered by periodically or at the end of a batch run stopping the oxidation, continuing to operate the electrochemical cell until all the metal has been converted to the higher valent cell and separating the metal from the anolyte eg. by volatilisation so that the heteroatoms can be removed as a waste solution or recovered rg. by crystallisation or precipitation. This avoids contamination of the recovered heteroatoms by unoxidised organicsand/or metal. The anolyte is preferably neutral or slightly acidic. The method has application in the destruction of halogenated organics in weapons materials or rocket fuels as well as saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons eg. dodecane.
