abstract The mycobactericidal (in particular tuberculocidal) activity of a quaternary ammonium salt is increased by contacting myco- or tuberculosis-causing bacteria with a disinfecting composition containing at least about 8% by weight of an alkylene glycol monoalkyl ether (especially diethylene glycol monobutyl ether). The ammonium cation is preferably a tetraalkylammonium or trialkyl (optionally alkylated) benzyl ammonium species. Compositions containing the ammonium salt and the glycol monoalkyl ether are also claimed. These are efficacious aldehyde-free tuberculocidal liquid compositions which are odorless, less-toxic, and essentially irritant-free and can be used to disinfect and sanitize a variety of surfaces.
