A process for the production of a modified phenol-aldehyde resin, which may form a binder system when combined with a curing agent which includes an additional source of an aldehyde, e.g., a phenol-formaldehyde resin, comprises (a) reacting a phenolic compound and an aldehyde in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, and (b) reacting a modifier comprising a compound selected from (1) dihydroxybenzenes, (2) aminophenols, and (3) phenylenediamines with the product of step (a). The resin and binder are useful in the production of a wood composite (such as plywood, oriented strandboard, or fiberboard). |
