titleOfInvention | Surface treatment of metallic components |
abstract | The surfaces of metallic components for use in a slitter head for stripping a can or cladding from a spent nuclear fuel element in a radioactive and corrosive environment are hardened and then covered by a coating comprising titanium nitride. The components are particularly a slitting wheel 1 and the pin 4 on which the wheel is rotatably mounted. Preferably, the entire surfaces of the slitting wheel and pin are treated, but treatment may be restricted to their mutually contacting surfaces. Hardening is achieved by a plasma nitriding heat treatment process and the titanium nitride coating is applied by an ion bonding technique. <IMAGE> |
