titleOfInvention | Mesogenic phenyl thioether derivatives and liquid crystalline media |
abstract | Mesogenic phenyl thioether derivatives of formula I <IMAGE> [wherein R<1> is a straight-chain or branched C1-12-alkyl or C2-12-alkenyl (in which one or more CH2 groups can also be replaced by a -O-, -S-, -O-CO-, -S-CO-, -O-COO-, -CO-O-, -CO-S-, -CHhalogeno- or -CHCN-group, two hereto atoms not being linked directly to one another); or is also F, Cl, Br or -NCS or polyfluoroalkyl (with 1-5 C atoms, in which one CF2 group can also be replaced by -O- or -S-); R<2> is -CH3 or, in the case where R<1> is F, Cl, Br or -NCS or polyfluoroalkyl (where one CF2 group can also be replaced by -O- or -S-), R<2> can also be a straight-chain or branched C1-12-alkyl or C2-12-alkenyl; <IMAGE> are each independently 1,4-phenylene (optionally substituted by up to four fluorine atoms) or trans-1,4-cyclohexane; <IMAGE> is 1,4-phenylene optionally substituted by up to four fluorine atoms; and Z<1> and Z<2> are each independently -CH2CH2- or a single bond, with the proviso that when R<1> is F, Cl or Br, at least one of the bridging groups Z<1> and Z<2> is -CH2CH2-] maybe used as components of liquid crystalline compositions. < |
