titleOfInvention | A process for making 6-hydroxymethyl substituted pyridines |
abstract | The invention relates to the compounds of formula <IMAGE> wherein X is NO2 or -CN; R1 is C1-8alkyl or C3-8cycloalkyl; G is an oxygen protecting group. These compounds are obtained by the treatment of a 6-methyl pyridine with a metal-containing base, such as sodium or potassium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide, followed by an oxidizing agent, such as an oxaziridine compound. 6-Hydroxymethyl pyridines are intermediates useful in the preparation of HIV reverse transcriptase inhibitors. HIV reverse transcriptase inhibitors are useful in the prevention or treatment of infection by HIV and the treatment of AIDS. |
