titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the recovery of calcium oxalate and other oxalate from trees
abstract Calcium oxalate and other insoluble or nearly insoluble organic salts, such as tartrates, citrates, and other oxalates, occurring in vegetable matter are recovered therefrom by a froth-flotation process in which air or gas charged with a suitable oil or other frothing agent is introduced into the mixture of vegetable matter and water. Petroleum may be used as frothing agent, the air or gas being charged therewith in any suitable manner. Alternatively, air or steam may be passed through an emulsion containing an essential or volatile oil, such as the emulsion obtained by grinding suitable seeds or fruits with water, with or without an alkali. Emulsions of animal or mineral origin, obtained, for example, from whale blubber or oil shales respectively, may be similarly treated. Instead of, or in addition to, frothing agents prepared as described above, the exhaust gases from gas, oil, or internal-combustion engines may be used. The vegetable matter may be treated directly or after the complete or partial removal of tannins and other soluble materials, and reagents, such as alkali, may be added. The invention is described by reference to the recovery of calcium oxalate from the bark of trees, such as the Terminalia Arjuna. Specification 208,684 is referred to.
