titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to the manufacture of acetic acid, acetaldehyde or acetone or mixtures containing the same |
abstract | Acetic acid, acetaldehyde or acetone or mixtures thereof are produced by passing methane together with carbon monoxide and/or carbon dioxide under pressure and at temperatures below about 500 DEG C. over a catalytic material. Said material comprises either a hydrogenation catalyst such as copper, iron, nickel, cobalt, palladium, platinum, palladium black or platinum black, or nickel carbonate or other metallic carbonate which dissociates at temperatures below 500 DEG C., or mixtures thereof. The catalytic material may form the tubes or apparatus in which the reaction is effected, or it may be mounted on porous substances or employed as wire, gauze, &c., whilst when carbonates are employed, other carbonates such as sodium carbonate may also be present. The oxides of carbon are preferably employed in excess. Moreover, the reaction gases may be continuously circulated through the apparatus. Examples are given of the preparation of acetaldehyde from methane and carbon monoxide and of acetic acid from methane and carbon dioxide, employing pressures of 12-50 atmospheres, temperatures of 120-300 DEG C. and catalysts consisting of finely-divided iron or nickel carbonate, the latter preferably mixed with finely-divided nickel or iron. The Provisional Specification is not restricted to the use of pressure. |
