titleOfInvention | Propellant charges |
abstract | Porous shaped propellent charge bodies particularly for caseless ammunition are produced by shaping a mixture of a high temperature resistant propellant, a filler and optionally a binder, the filler subsequently being removed to leave pores in the shaped composition. The filler is a thermally removable substance removed on heating the shaped composition to a suitable temperature, which temperature is below the decomposition temperature of the propellant. The preferred propellant is alpha-octogen, but reference is also made to RDX, PETN and many other materials. A preferred filler is ammonium hydrogen carbonate, but many other fillers are listed, such as organic compounds which are sublimed and polymers which are depolymerised. |
