abstract A nematic liquid-crystal composition for active matrix displays with high voltage holding ratio and extremely low threshold voltage, based on terminally and laterally fluorinated compounds, is characterized in that it comprises about 6 to 80% by weight of one or more compounds from group 1: group 1: <IMAGE> (wherein R<1> denotes a straight-chain alkyl, alkenyl or oxaalkyl group of 2 to 7 carbon atoms; Q<1> is -A-, -CH2CH2-A- or - A -CH2CH2- (wherein A is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene); and L1 is H or F] and about 6 to 80 % by weight of one or more compounds from group 2: group 2: <IMAGE> [wherein R<2> and Q<2> have the meaning given above for R<1> and Q<1>, respectively].
