abstract | A cathode-ray tube has a face plate (1) which includes a phosphor layer (8) provided at the inner surface side of a glass plate (10) and an optical interference filter (7) provided between the phosphor layer (8) and the inner surface of the plate (10), the optical interference filter (7) being constituted by a plurality of alternating high- and low-refractive index layers (2, 3, 4, 5), wherein the outermost layer (5) of the optical interference filter in contact with the phosphor layer (8) is an Al2O3 layer or a ZrO2 layer having a physical thickness of 10 nm or more. The high-refractive index layer (3) of the optical interference filter preferably consists of TiO2, and its low-refractive index layer (4) preferably consists of Al2O3. The outer layer (5) protects the filter (7) from damage during cleaning before the phosphor (8) is applied, and from colouring by exposure to the scanning electron beam (R). A number of specific examples are given. A method of producing the alternate layers of high- and low-refractive index material is also disclosed in which an oxide or an element convertible into an oxide is formed on the inner surface of the faceplate and is then irradiated with O2 ions in a reduced-pressure atmosphere containing O2. <IMAGE> |
