titleOfInvention Optically anisotropic materials and applications
abstract An optical device is described having a polarisation state which is externally controllable and comprises a layer of a photochromic material which possesses a polar state in its bleached or coloured form and which has been subjected to molecular orientation. In one typical form of the device, the photochromic layer is disposed between transparent substrates and subjected to an electrical field to cause molecular alignment of the photochromic material.
