abstract The dyeing or printing of textile fibres is effected by impregnating or printing them with a mixture of a salt of an ester of a leuco vat dye (described in Specification 186,057) and an oxidizing agent, which is inactive in neutral or faintly acid solution but effective at higher temperatures, and then developing the dyeing by steaming; a catalyst to promote the oxidation may be added. Thus the neutral or faintly acid solution may contain the ester of the leuco vat dye, a chlorate, and a catalyst such as potassium ferricyanide, ammonium vanadate, or osmium tetroxide. Reserve effects may be obtained by printing the dyeing, before steaming, with salts having an alkaline reaction, such as sodium carbonate or acetate, or sodium thiosulphate, or reducing agents such as hydrosulphite N.F.; coloured effects are obtained by adding to the reserve paste mordant, basic, nitrosamine red, or vat dyestuffs. According to an example, cotton is dyed or printed with a solution containing the ester salt of dihydro-indigo, ammonium vanadate or potassium ferricyanide and sodium chlorate, and then steamed for 2-5 minutes. Specifications 203,681, 212,546 and 218,649 also are referred to.
