abstract The invention relates to benzenediazonium compounds of formula <IMAGE> in which R<1> represents a C1-6 alkyl; R<2>, R<3> each represents a C1-6 alkyl group, an aralkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety, a C1-6 hydroxyalkyl group, a C1-6 chloroalkyl group, or R<2> and R<3> together represent an alkylene group needed to complete a 5- or 6-membered saturated heterocyclic ring which may contain a further hetero atom, for example O, S or N; R4 represents H, Cl or Sr, and X(-) represents an anion. These compounds absorb light radiation above 500 nm, are thermally stable, decompose colourlessly upon photolysis, do not couple prematurely and with couplers produce dyestuffs the absorption maxima of which may be virtually identical with those of the diazonium compounds precusors.
