New 3,3'-sulphinyl-di(4-acyloxy-benzoic acid esters) and 3,3'-sulphonyl-di(4-acyloxy-benzoic acid esters) of the general formula <IMAGE> wherein A is <IMAGE> R<1> is CmH2m+1, CmH2m+1O- or CmH2m+1COO-; x is 1 or 2, z is 1 or 2; and n and m are 1-10, 4-[4-(4-substituted benzylidene-amino)-naphthyl-(1)-azo] benzoic acid ethyl esters, biphenyl 4,4', -bis-(4-carbonyloxy-benzylidene-malonic acid-di-n-alkyl esters) or 4-(4-alkyl-cyclohexanoyloxy)-2-methylbenzoic acid-(4-substituted phenyl esters) are used alone or in mixtures one another or with other liquid crystalline or non-liquid crystalline substances as vitreous nematic liquid crystals. |
