| abstract |
Unsaturated fatty acid lower alkyl ester sulfonate is produced by (i) sulfonating a mixture of (A) an unsaturated fatty acid lower alkyl ester (e.g. palm oil methyl ester) and (B) a saturated fatty acid lower alkyl ester, (ii) neutralizing the sulfonated mixture, and (iii) hydrolyzing the neutralized mixture. The hydrolyzed mixture is allowed to separate at a temperature of 40 DEG C to 120 DEG C by adding (a) an alcohol having 1 to 5 carbon atoms and (b) a sorbitan fatty acid ester or glycerol fatty acid ester having an HLB value of 4 or less, whereby an oil layer containing the unreacted saturated fatty acid lower alkyl ester is separated from an aqueous layer containing the unsaturated fatty acid lower alkyl ester sulfonate. |
